Ready or not, here it comes! Starting tomorrow, March 30 – 2012, all Facebook pages will be converted to the timeline layout.
There are several factors to consider when you move to the new layout. The biggest feature is obviously the cover photo. Facebook has laid out several rules for this image, some of which are listed here:
(taken direct from Facebook’s page guidelines)
- Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it on socialmusic.com”;
- Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section;
- References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features; or
- Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”
You will notice that the tabs or apps are now located under the cover image and by default, you can only see 3. Photos is fixed and cannot be moved so you need to carefully choose and arrange your apps to optimise your page. The apps now have a larger icon or image which can be used to your advantage and fully customise your page. Apps are now given 810px in width instead of only 520px – while odd at first, a huge advantage for a mini site and content.
Finally, the feature that gives this layout it’s name, Timeline, is set to serve you and your customers by giving a full history of your brand, product or service. You can back date, highlight (full width) or pin (fix to top for 7 days) any posts, images or videos.
